Frequently Asked Questions
How does Spray Tanning Work? Is it safe?
TanTale sunless tans are extremely safe. Sunless tanning works only on the outer layer of the skin, using a colourless sugar referred to as Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA reacts with the amino acids and oxygen found in the skin to transform the top layer into a golden bronze colour. DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in the cosmetic and sunless tanning industry for years. In an enhanced effort to ensure the safest environment, TanTale utilizes state-of-the-art spray equipment eliminating most overspray or what some refer to as the “cloud” they have experienced in other spray booths.
How do I prepare for my spray tan?
Good question! Check out the instructions page for all of our best spray tan tips.
How long is my tan going to last?
Given the science of how a sunless tan works, which is on the top layer of skin only, ALL sunless tans (no matter what anyone else may try to falsely sell you) typically last an average of 7 days . The length of time will depend on your level of activity, how well you take care of the tan and the condition of your skin. For best results it is recommended that you use aftercare products as they were formulated specifically to work well with the sunless tan and extenders can prolong the colour. To maintain your tan year-round inquire about monthly tanning memberships.
I have an event coming up. When should I get my spray tan done?
We recommend 2-3 days before an event. For brides we recommend 2 days before. You will need to have a minimum of two rinses/showers before your event to get the instant bronzer off as that is when your spray tan looks the best & is set in to your skin. For any really big events (such as weddings) we suggest a trial 5-6 weeks prior.
What is the difference between normal spray tan and rapid tan?
There is no difference between colour and longevity. A Traditional Tan needs a minimum of 8 hours of developing time (max 24 hours). The Rapid Tan you will rinse off between 1-4 hours based on the darkness you are looking to achieve. Rapid Tans are great for same day events, those that do not like sleeping in solution or are worried about bronzer rubbing off on sheets and those that like to workout daily. The colour takes the same time to fully develop but with the Rapid rinse option you have the convenience of being able to rinse off quicker and not have to sleep in your tan if getting sprayed later in the day.
I don’t tan in the sun, can I still get a sunless tan?
Never fear, the answer to your prayers to the sun gods is here! We are able to personalize our tanning formulations to work seamlessly with your specific skin tone. This will ensure a healthy glow and prevent anything artificial-looking on even the fairest of skin colors.
Will I look orange?
Heck no! We wouldn’t be in business or have the credentials that we do if we made people orange. The products we use are of the highest industry quality, water-based, non-sticky, and proven to provide stunning results on clients of all skin tones and types.
Does it have a bad smell?
Our carefully curated and high-end sunless solutions are formulated with a wonderful smell, making them unlike most other sunless tanning methods.
Will a spray tan protect me from getting sunburned?
No! When going into the sun, you must always wear sun protection. The only way it may help to protect you is that you will not be tempted to sun bake since you will have your tan already.
I’m hapū/pregnant. Can I get a spray tan?
We spray tan many hapū ladies, however it is your responsibility to contact your doctor for permission. Although the active ingredient is FDA approved we cannot make the determination if it is safe for your particular situation.
I’m breastfeeding, can I get a spray tan?
You sure can! We suggest getting a rapid tan and wearing a bandeau top or bra. Alternatively we offer nipple covers at no extra cost for breastfeeding māmā.
Will the solution stain my clothing and sheets?
The tanning solutions are water-soluble and will wash off but in some cases can stain light coloured garments. Once you have your first shower it is set in and you should not see any spray tan residue coming off on your clothing. It may take 2 rinses to fully rinse off the bronzer/residue.
What is the difference between a handheld custom spray tan and a spray tan booth?
With a custom spray tan you will have a thorough conversation with us to determine the best solution and tan for you. A spray tan booth will only have a few select options with no way to tell what will work best for you. We have multiple solutions to choose from for custom spray tans as opposed to 2-3 for spray tan booths. The artist controls the amount of solution on the areas that need to appear more natural such as the face, inside of the arms and legs ect. You can actually speak to someone and tell them exactly what you are looking for. With a custom spray tan you do not need to worry about standing in the correct position. Your spray tan artist will guide you through the entire process gving you a flawless and even tan!
I’m going in the ocean/pool. Will my spray tan fade?
Salt water is a natural exfoliant but will not strip your tan. Salt and chlorine will dry out your skin faster and make your skin cells exfoliate faster. We recommend wearing a waterproof sunblock, which will help protect your skin. You will not physically see your spray tan coming off in the ocean or pool.
Is it really necessary to buy your suggested retail products? Can I find other alternatives?
You may be able to find body washes, lotions and scrubs for a couple dollars less, but you might be risking your colour. A gradual self-tanner you get to extend your tan might not contain the same high amounts of moisturizing ingredients or quality DHA as a professional salon product. The drug store body washes usually contain sulfates or heavy fragrances, which can strip your colour. They cost less because they are not the same quality that professionals use.
How do I remove my tan?
The best way to get rid of your tan is to soak in a hot bath and exfoliate.
